Keep messes at a minimum with proper care
of carpet spills and other accidents.
The beauty and lifespan of your carpet depends largely on how you care for it. A regular cleaning schedule along with professional hot water extraction every 12 months is essential to maintaining your investment. Avoid accidental damage by always following the manufacturer recommendations when it comes to choosing cleaning products for use on your new carpeting. Proper cleaning can keep carpet looking great for its full intended lifespan while improving indoor air quality and ensuring your warranties remain intact.
Carpet stains and spills
While there has been many advancements in stain-resistant carpeting, treating spills and stains properly is key to preventing damage to your carpet and rugs.
Step 1: Remove excess ASAP.
Scrape off any excess solids as soon as possible. Gently blot away excess liquid with a clean white absorbent cloth working from the outside edge of the stain toward the center to prevent spreading. Always blot, never rub, which can permanently damage carpet fibers. Repeat until the cloth no longer picks up any color.
Step 2: Apply a carpet stain remover.
Spray any remaining stain with a carpet stain remover, following the manufacturer's instructions for application. Take care not to over-wet the stain, which can damage the backing. Let sit for 10 minutes.
Step 3: Blot stain away.
Using a clean, white, absorbent cloth, blot from the outside in. Repeat until the stain no longer transfers to the cloth. Blot with cold water, then blot dry.
Keeping your carpet look new
The four key components of a proper carpet care and maintenance routine are as follows:
- Vacuum regularly with an approved vacuum cleaner, and do so more frequently in high traffic areas.
- Clean spills quickly using safe products, being sure to blot and rinse thoroughly so spots don't reappear.
- Have your carpet professionally deep cleaned every 12 to 18 months to remove deeply embedded dirt.
- Use entry mats and remove shoes at the door to keep from tracking dirt inside.
